Breakfast Tricks for Night Owls

I have found that the most successful way to “adult” is to have a series of tips and tricks to make you appear more put together than you actually are. Or in the words of Donna (my mom), “fake it til you make it”. Use enough of these tricks and somewhere along way you’ll figure out this whole adulting thing.

I have never, ever been a morning person and by default, also not a breakfast person. I would prefer to sleep until the very last possible minute and throw my makeup on during my commute at stoplights. But they (adulting experts) weren’t messing around when they said that breakfast was the most important meal of the day. No one wants to hear your grumbling stomach in morning meetings or deal with your hanger. So for all of you fellow night owls I bring you my breakfast tips for night owls.

Overnight Oats

I found this tip in the Fit Girl’s Guide and I have been hooked ever since. This recipe is so easy and can be prepped several days in advance (keeps up to 3 days). The best part is, there a LOTS of variations (try these too) and you can make up your own concoctions with whatever you have in the fridge.

IMG_9403    Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup of Old Fashioned Oats
  • 1/3 cup of Milk (of your choice, switching it up and going with coconut milk!)
  • 1/3 cup of Greek Yogurt (again, of your choosing)
  • 1/2 tablespoon of Honey
  • 1 teaspoon of Chia Seeds
  • 1/3 cup of Fruit (of your choice)
  • Mason Jar/Tupperware
Untitled design The best part of this recipe (other than is easy customization) is how easy it is to remember, thanks to the simple ingredient measurement. Add 1/3 cup of Oatmeal, Yogurt, Milk and Fruit to the mason jar.
IMG_9419 Add 1/2 tablespoon of honey and teaspoon of chia seeds and mix! Top with toppings of your choosing. I like to add walnuts and yogurt chips for a little extra crunch.

And, that’s it! Step one to making your breakfast a little bit sweeter.

Cold Press Coffee

Every night owl understands the importance of caffeine, and a LOT of it.  This one is so easy it doesn’t even feel fair. If you spend your nights scrolling though Buzzfeed quizzes and pinning recipes on Pinterest you’ll never make, this is the perfect way to get your morning kickstart with minimal effort. Cold press coffee is even stronger than regular brew, so this tip is easy AND effective in bringing you that morning buzz.

IMG_9422 Simply combine 1/3 cup of your favorite ground coffee and 1 1/2 cups of room temperature water in a French Press or pitcher (if you use a pitcher or other liquid holding device, be sure to strain the coffee prior to consuming).

Stir (Vigorously, or not).

Let sit over night at room temperature.

While you are running out the door the next morning (or calmly, peacefully while you read the morning paper, whatever floats your boat), pour over ice and mix with the fixings of your choice milk, creamer, sugar, Bailey’s, etc.

I am still faking it every day as I attempt to become a morning person, but these two tricks (and some Beyonce) help make mornings a little easier!
