A Basic White Girl’s Guide to Pumpkin Beer

I love fall. What girl doesn’t. The crunchy, colorful leaves, crispy, cool air, and most importantly, pumpkin beer. I am not a big beer drinker, but I can get down with some seasonal beer.

Pumpkin beer is no joke. It seems like the pumpkin flavored goodness has exploded this year. So much so that there is fear of a pumpkin shortage! I have yet to meet a pumpkin beer that I haven’t liked, but it is time that we discovered a leader in the pack. We decided to try pumpkin beer so you could skip right to the good stuff. And we documented the quest for your viewing pleasure:

While we both graduated from a top-tier drinking school, Ohio University, we don’t actually know a whole lot about what makes a beer “good”. So we will share our initial reactions and let the experts take it home. When it comes to beer reviews, the Alström Bros of BeerAdvocate are the beer experts.

Lakefront Brewing, Inc

Pumpkin Lager
Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Katie: Not enough pumpkin.

Holly: Meh.

Experts: BA Score: 80 -A very well-spiced Pumpkin Lager. Oh yeah … it’s a lager. Easy to drink for what it is. When it comes to spiced beer, it’s pretty subjective on whether you want more than one—but we could see having more than one. Read more>>

Ace Cider
Pumpkin Cider
Sebastopol, California

Katie: Not enough pumpkin. 1 out of 5 stars.

Holly: Cider is perfect the way it is. Don’t mess with a good thing.

Experts: No Beer Advocate score because, well, it’s not a beer. But take our word for it and stick with traditional hard ciders.

Editor’s Note: The Ace Pineapple Cider is DELICIOUS.

Katie: Perfect amount of pumpkin

Holly: Dark, Coffee, Porter-y

Experts: BA Score: 83 – The nose brings forward some sweet pumpkin as well as cinnamon, clove, allspice, and a little bit of brown sugar. The taste is sweet pumpkin and light brown sugar as well as a good dose of spicing. Nice, creamy mouthfeel. Drinks really quite well for what it is. Read More>>

Fluffy Pumpkin Toasted Marshmallow Porter

Katie: Highly enjoyed. Tastes like a roasted pumpkin

Holly: Pair with smores, which we did

Experts: BA Score: n/a – Taste is porter roasted malts with pumpkin spices, a little sweetness, and pumpkin. Body is medium-light, mouthfeel is very much porter. Aftertaste again is roasted malts and some pumpkin spice, nutmeg and cinnamon. This is a nice porter, with a pumpkin/fall theme. It is not pumpkin pie in a glass, but it’s a well made and tasty beer. Katie: LOVE!

Holly: DOUBLE LOVE. 5 out of 5, would drink again.

Experts: BA Score: 90 – Upfront there are light to moderate flavors of slightly sweet caramel malts with moderate flavors of pumpkin contributing to the sweetness. That is followed by moderate to strong flavors of cappuccino and finishes with a moderate flavor of spices – cinnamon and nutmeg. I really like this beer, it is very delicious – if Pumpkin Latte/Cappuccino tasted like this, I would be addicted to them. Really nice complexity and flavors are very complementary. Easy to drink because of the lighter mouthfeel and lower ABV. Read More>>
